Install the hivepod CLI

hivepod is DockHive’s command-line tool. It deploys folders as apps, manages HivePods and their backups, and runs the DockHive MCP server for AI coding tools. It needs Python 3.9 or later.

Terminal window
curl -fsSL https://dockhive.io/install.sh | sh

The script installs hivepod in ~/.hivepods and adds ~/.hivepods/bin to your PATH. Open a new terminal afterwards.

Check it:

Terminal window
hivepod --version

To upgrade, run the install command again.

Variable Meaning
HIVEPODS_VERSION Install a specific version, for example 0.2.1.
HIVEPODS_HOME Install somewhere other than ~/.hivepods.
HIVEPODS_NO_MODIFY_PATH=1 Don’t edit your shell profile (macOS and Linux).
PYTHON The Python 3.9+ interpreter to use.

No Python? On macOS run xcode-select --install (or brew install python); on Debian or Ubuntu, sudo apt install python3 python3-venv; on Windows, winget install Python.Python.3.12.

Terminal window
hivepod login

Your browser opens the DockHive console. Approve the request and return to the terminal. Your email address must be verified.

  • No browser on this machine? hivepod login --no-browser signs in with your email and password (and a two-factor code if you use one).

  • CI and servers: create an API key and set it in the environment. It’s used instead of a stored sign-in and never written to disk:

    Terminal window
    export HIVEPODS_TOKEN=dh_pat_...

Sign out with hivepod logout.

Settings live in ~/.hivepods/config.yaml (readable only by you). View and change them with:

Terminal window
hivepod config list
hivepod config set default_size small
Environment variable Meaning
HIVEPODS_TOKEN Use an API key instead of the stored sign-in.
HIVEPODS_CONFIG_DIR Use another config folder (default ~/.hivepods).
HIVEPODS_MCP_LOG Log level for the MCP server, written to stderr (for example INFO).
